India’s Minister of External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi will arrive in Spain today to meet with her counterpart Angelos Moreno Bau.

Today’s meeting is an opportunity for Madrid and New Delhi to strengthen ties as Lekhi and Bau will likely discuss the mutual economic advantages of expanding trade. Lekhi will launch ‘The Beatles and India’ exhibition and address the attendees about India’s Development Cooperation at the Spain-India Council Foundation—a civil society platform fostering relations between Spain and India.

In accordance with New Delhi’s foreign policy of increasing economic cooperation with the EU, expect commercial trade between Madrid and New Delhi to boost during the short-term. Following today’s meeting it’s highly likely that New Delhi-Madrid will also increase their engagement in joint ventures by organizing further trade fairs and exhibitions in the near future, especially in the sectors of technology, pharmaceuticals and medicine. In the long-term,  however, it is highly unlikely that India and the EU will construct a Free Trade Agreement despite attempts to resume negotiations. New Delhi’s negligence to comply with EU’s strict terms regarding the lowering of greenhouse gas emissions and collaboration on tax evasion will hinder the development of the negotiation process.
