The UK’s Digital, Culture Media and Sport Committee will hear testimony today from Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer, as part of its “fake news inquiry”.

The Facebook executive will answer questions on the social media giant’s recent Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which an estimated 87 million American and European users’ data was compromised.

Mr Schroepfer’s testimony comes after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s before the US Congress earlier in the month. Mr Zuckerberg faced five hours of lawmaker questions on privacy, data mining, regulations and Cambridge Analytica.

UK lawmakers will likely build off of the US Congress’ testimonies to press Mr Schroepfer. Expect the interrogation to extract Mr Schroepfer’s awareness and involvement with Cambridge Analytica along with the extent to which Europeans are affected by the data breaches. In order to save face and further legal repercussions, Facebook and its technology executive must cooperate with lawmakers to develop regulations that prevent the recurrence of this scandal.
