The inaugural Sydney Dialogue on emerging, critical and cyber technologies will begin today.

The summit, cohosted by the Australian government and Meta, will focus on space, the quantum computing race and the implications of emerging technologies on government. It will feature keynote addresses from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo. Though the event will draw delegates from around the world, it will mostly reflect Indian and Australian concerns.

This Indo-Australian focus reflects deepening economic and security ties between the two countries as Australia seeks to pivot away from Chinese markets following Chinese sanctions on the country, and India continues its strategic realignment away from neutrality and toward the anti-China Quad bloc. Technology especially has been a key area of cooperation between the two countries, which have opened a grants program aimed at advancing strategic technologies.

The summit’s hope is to cement that cooperation, particularly as regards cybersecurity. Expect some limited success here, likely in the form of research coordination. Though the bilateral relationship is still tentative, neither country wants to become reliant on US cyber capabilities, and greater cooperation in the research sphere may prevent them from falling behind.
