Indian CPI(Maoist) groups to hold protests
The Communist Party of India’s (CPI Maoist) martyr week will begin today.
India outlawed the left-wing organization in 2009 under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. The CPI(Maoist) is a prominent faction of the Naxalites, which has been engaged in an ongoing internal conflict with New Delhi since 1967. Today, the CPI(Maoist) cadres will stage anti-government demonstrations in several districts located mainly in Andhra Pradesh to commemorate the members that died from police confrontations. The protests could result in disturbances, which will in turn prompt Indian law enforcement to retaliate, leaving casualties.
Apart from the locals’ reluctance to provide further support, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is preparing to increase government-sponsored investments mainly in Andra Pradesh, which will weaken the regional activity of CPI (Maoist) and influence in the short-term. It is highly likely that the violent acts of CPI (Maoist) and other illegal leftist organizations such as People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) will be fully subdued during the long-term, as the demilitarized groups will strike a passive stance to carry out their missions. The setbacks will force the insurgents to capitulate and abide by New Delhi’s terms in exchange for minor concessions such as the release of mid-level prisoners.
