The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) will today release water from the Kondapochamma Sagar Project (KSP), a key component and highest point in the multi-project aggregation.

KLIP, the world’s largest multi-stage lift irrigation project, will achieve a unique status with today’s milestone. With the capacity to lift Godavari River reserves 618 vertical metres over thousands of kilometres of infrastructure, KLIP will provide water to hundreds of villages throughout Hyderabad for drinking, environmental restoration and industrial use. After a record span of three years, the KSP inauguration has arrived in time to partially mitigate aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic’s catastrophic economic fallout.

Expect the KSP—which will irrigate previously arid Telangana lands—to serve as a springboard for the development of the local economy, providing much-needed jobs and increasing agricultural yield and rural income. The flood management features of the project’s infrastructure could relieve water supply stress at times of peak demand, and are a welcome addition to a rainfall-dependent Hyderabad that has historically contended with acute shortages. The effects of climate change will likely boost the rationale for investment in similar structures and continue to test regional reserves.
