The European Political Community holds its first meeting in Prague.

French President Emanuel Macron launched the concept in May with the aim of promoting political cooperation between European countries amidst the Ukraine crisis. EU member state representatives, along with the representatives of states such as Turkey, the UK and Ukraine, will discuss various political issues concerning continental Europe. The most important, however, is the ongoing food and energy crisis that resulted from Russia’s ongoing incursion in Ukraine. The meeting will then be followed by roundtable discussions.

The European Political Community is an important platform for the EU to strengthen its cordial relations with its neighbors to further contain Russian aggression during the short-to medium term. It is also a means for Brussels to expand its current borders. Brussels previously granted candidacy status to Ukraine and Moldova, this will likely follow suit with other countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia. With that in mind, despite being an EU candidate since 1999, Brussels will refrain from engaging in cordial strategy with Turkey. This is because Ankara has had ambiguous relations with Russia as it refrained from imposing sanctions.
